What was the inspiration for this book? I've always been fascinated by ancient Egypt. I was particularly intrigued by a woman named Dorothy Eady, a British woman who believed she was the reincarnation of an Egyptian priestess. That, combined with the fact that Nefertiti was such an important woman in Egyptian history, yet her tomb has never been found, inspired me to write this story of Verity.

Verity Easton
1930s Egypt is a truly visceral place seen through the eyes of a curious and vulnerable child, where every sound and scent comes alive on the page. Loads of historical detail and artifact obsession adds tons of fun. Throughout, Wildsmith walks a delicate line between cinema and overly descriptive literature in her scene descriptions, ensuring that the pace is never slowed and yet every observation is palpable.

Hattie Vavaseur is a deliciously supernatural mystery and love story best paired with a glass of a sherry, a crackling fire and a keen eye for secret messages hidden throughout. There is a richness in the descriptions of places and observations of people that hooks the reader.

The detailed descriptive scenes are so vivid that I believed I was reading a true story. As a fiction, I liked the mystical theme, starting with Verity’s dreams and ending with Nefertiti’s truth. Wildsmith is a literary scholar who dives deep into the narrative and structures the sentences according to the atmosphere of the characters. Accordingly, following that our characters are English and Arabic, I find that Wildsmith used specialized language rather than an easy-comprehension one. In my opinion, this expresses the author’s strength in mastering the craft not as a creative writing skill only but as an academic.

Harness Magazine Interview
I wanted to follow up Hattie Vavaseur, but I didn't necessarily want to write a series. Instead, I chose to use a crossover character, Vamelda Anstruthers, the medium who helps Hattie along her journey. As far as Verity Easton goes, I was kind of feeling powerless in my life and noticed that other women I knew were feeling the same, due to societal pressures and people-pleasing habits. I felt like they needed a voice that didn't necessarily end with her becoming a badass, but rather, by making the ultimate sacrifice.
